For years I worked inside a company deep in the data on terpenes- the aromatic botanical essential oil compounds that give plants their smell and, as it turns out, a surprising amount of their effect on the human body.

Gary Brecka has pointed, across appearances including on Joe Rogan, to lavender essential oil as a straightforward lever for lowering cortisol and improving sleep quality. Diffuse it in the evening, he suggests, and the system gets a clear signal to downshift. He places it alongside other simple, low-friction tools rather than as a miracle. The framing is practical: one plant compound, used consistently, moving a measurable dial.

Dr. Rhonda Patrick has highlighted research on aromatherapy during sleep producing large cognitive effects - one line of work showed boosts in cognitive capacity up to 226% in older adults, potentially linked to preserved brain integrity. Her broader work on plant compounds (polyphenols, sulforaphane and the Nrf2 pathway, hormetic botanicals) treats these molecules as real biological inputs with documented downstream effects on inflammation, detoxification, and resilience. The through-line is that certain plants contain compounds the body recognizes and responds to.

Ben Greenfield has gone further into direct application. In conversations with experts on essential oils, he has explored vaporizing specific blends - rosemary, pine, floral absolutes - for lung and brain delivery. He talks about sublingual tinctures, nebulizers, and integrating oils into sauna protocols for amplified effect. The emphasis is on feeling the shift in real time: focus, calm, or sensual grounding. He treats the terpene content as the active part of the story.

Dave Asprey, in his writing on whether essential oils “actually work,” has been direct. He maps concrete uses - rosemary and sage for alertness and memory (citing double-blind work), lavender for calm, specific applications along the vagus or meridians - while being clear about quality, dilution, and dosage. He notes the nose-to-brain pathway and the mitochondrial angle. His position is pragmatic: these are tools that can move physiology when used with intention, not background fragrance.

Dr. Mark Hyman and Dr. Josh Axe have brought the functional medicine and traditional lens. Axe’s extensive guides on essential oils catalog anti-inflammatory, mood, and immune-supporting actions tied to specific compounds (linalool, β-caryophyllene and others), with references to studies on IBS symptoms, hair growth, migraines, and anxiety. Hyman frames plant medicines - herbs, spices, oils - as part of root-cause work for chronic conditions. The conversation between them on ancient remedies returning to modern practice treats these as legitimate, bioactive inputs rather than folklore.

Then there is the researcher layer. Dr. Ethan Russo’s 2011 paper in the British Journal of Pharmacology, “Taming THC: Potential Cannabis Synergy and Phytocannabinoid-Terpenoid Entourage Effects,” remains foundational. Russo showed how terpenes such as β-caryophyllene (a CB2 agonist), linalool (GABA-A modulator), pinene, limonene and others do not simply smell nice. They synergize. They amplify or modulate effects on pain, inflammation, anxiety, mood, and neuroprotection. He explicitly connects this to aromatherapy and essential oil traditions - lemon oil’s limonene content, for example. The “entourage” is pharmacology, not poetry.

I watched these threads converge while working at Eybna. The leading compounds come from black pepper (β-caryophyllene), lavender (linalool), rose and geranium (geraniol, citronellol), pine and rosemary (borneol, pinene notes), clove, oregano, thyme. The outcome the data pointed toward: social confidence and presence without the fog.

The Serene combination leads with A2A (via linalool and limonene from lavender and lemon) reinforced by GABA support and a light CB1 tone. Pine (β-pinene), rose, hops, rosemary, lavender, citrus. The target: waking calm - present, clear, able to reset without checking out.

These are not broad “relax” oils. They are formulated to interact with the exact systems the researchers and clinicians had been describing.

The gap that remained was delivery.

The experts had the mechanisms and the protocols. Life has the timing problem. The meeting is in four minutes. The stress wave arrives on the plane. The date is tonight. You do not have twenty minutes for a diffuser or the perfect dropper routine. You need the compounds in the right ratios, fast, in the exact second the moment arrives.
